Our Governing Body and Committees
Along with the Head Teacher, the governing body are the strategic leaders of our school and have a vital role to play in making sure every child gets the best possible education. This is reflected in the law, which states that the purpose of maintained school governing bodies is to ‘conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement at the school’.
The governing body has a strong focus on three core strategic functions:
- Ensuring clarity of vision, ethos and strategic direction;
- Holding the Head Teacher to account for the educational performance of the school and its pupils, and the performance management of staff; and
- Overseeing the financial performance of the school and making sure its money is well spent.
Further information about the structure and responsibilities of the governing body and its committees can be found in the Terms of Reference for committees document for each academic year.
Our Governors
Mr K Hay
Chair of Governors
Term of office expiry: 08/11/2028
“I have had the privilege of serving as a governor at Clover Hill Primary School for over ten years, including the last five as Chair of Governors. Having lived in the Clover Hill catchment area for many years, I have always felt a strong connection to the school and its community, which was a key reason I first chose to become a governor. I wanted to play an active role in supporting a local school with such a positive reputation and to contribute to ensuring the very best outcomes for its pupils. As Service Manager of the Gateshead School Sport Partnership / School’s Health & Wellbeing Service (part of Education, Schools & Inclusion at Gateshead Council), I support schools with whole school improvement, staff development, and a wide range of opportunities for children and young people. This role gives me valuable insight into best practice across the education sector, allowing me to bring informed perspectives, practical experience, and a strategic understanding of school development to the governing body. These experiences enable me to support Clover Hill in maintaining high standards and continually striving for improvement. As a parent of a child who now attends Clover Hill, I feel deeply connected to the school community. Seeing my son thrive here reinforces my commitment to ensuring that Clover Hill continues to provide a high quality, nurturing, and ambitious learning environment for all pupils. It is a privilege to play a part in shaping the strategic direction of the school and supporting its ongoing development.”

I am a mother of two children who both attend Clover Hill Primary School. Since welcoming my eldest in 2018, I have taken time away from work to focus on my family, and now that both children are in full-time education, I was thrilled to be elected as a Parent Governor. I am keen to serve as a Governor and to draw upon my professional experience as an Early Years Teacher and SENCo to contribute positively to strategic leadership and effective governance. Mrs S Lutynski
Parent Governor
Term of office 29/11/2026
I am a parent governor at the school and have two daughters who attend. As a parent, I feel very connected to the school community and care deeply about ensuring it continues to be a positive, supportive place for all children. I chose to become a governor because I wanted to be more involved in the school’s growth and development and to support the important work being done by staff. I work as a manager in a mortgage department, where I have gained strong skills in leadership, communication and decision-making. I hope to use these skills, alongside a parent’s perspective, to contribute positively to discussions and help support the school as part of the governing body.
Role of Governors
The governing body is responsible for both the conduct of the school and for promoting high standards. The governing body carries out its role by setting the vision for the school and then ensuring that the school works efficiently and effectively towards achieving its vision. It does this by building a thorough knowledge of the school and its community, by both supporting and constructively challenging the school, and by ensuring accountability and compliance. The governing body of the school is made up of parent governors, staff governors, Local Authority governors and co-opted governors.
Parent governor vacancies are advertised, as they arise, to all parents/carers of children at the school. If no nominations are received, governors may approach a parent/carer they believe may be interested and appoint them. Local Authority governors are nominated via Gateshead Council Cabinet. Staff governor vacancies are advertised, as they arise, to staff in school. Co-opted governors are appointed by the Governing Body and can be parents, staff, members of the community or someone from outside the community who has an interest in the school/education.
Before you decide to nominate someone (permission of the nominee must be sought), or indeed stand yourself, you may want to know a bit more about what is involved. Governors need not be experts in the field of education. What they do need is an interest in the school and in the welfare of our children and the time and willingness to get involved. The skills you have can be very useful to the governing body. Governors need what is known as ‘soft skills’ – the ability to be able to build relationships with a range of people, to be able to work as part of a team, to be able to question, and to make connections between different types of information. All governors are expected to be able to read straightforward budget reports and data on school standards.
Our governing body expects governors to
- attend three termly meetings of the full governing body
- sit on at least one committee and attend the meetings which are usually once a term
- visit the school formally for monitoring purposes once a term
- visit the school informally when available
- commit to attend training courses, perform additional research as required
In return, our governing body commits to
- provide you with a structured induction
- provide access to quality training via Gateshead Council, Clerking Service
- provide you with an experienced governor as mentor
